This week's Theme Thursday topic, Climate Change, was suggested by Baino at Baino's Banter and Kim at Mouse Medicine. They're both big supporters of Blog Action Day. (If you don't already know about Blog Action Day, please check it out.)
So, how to address this important issue...
I took the scientific approach and went to the following website:
Call me crazy, but I like their simple explanations.....
- "Sometimes little things can turn into big things. Think about brushing your teeth. If you don't brush for one day, chances are nothing bad will happen. But if you don't brush your teeth for one month, you may develop a cavity. It's the same thing with global temperatures. If temperatures rise above normal levels for a few days, it's no big deal – the Earth will stay more or less the same. But if temperatures continue to rise over a longer period of time, then the Earth may experience some problems."
But getting back to the more serious issue at hand, Climate Change...
It's okay to admit to yourself and to another human being that you're not a rocket scientist. It's okay to start with the kids' version of Climate Change. Sometimes a kid can explain it much better than a grown-up and Al Gore is not everybody's cup of tea.
So, keep it simple. Learn more, even if it's just from a web site for kids. And remember what they say on the Climate Change Kids Site:
- "Climate change may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference. If we try, most of us can do our part to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that we put into the atmosphere."
(Oh, and don't forget to floss.)

Very true. On that note, I thought I'd share the following with you:
Former Secretary-General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Kofi Annan, along with the Global Humanitarian Forum, have teamed up to launch a global campaign titled Tck Tck Tck: Time for Climate Justice to raise awareness and ultimately call for a fair, binding and global post-Kyoto deal based on climate justice in Copenhagen between December 7 - 18, 2009, at the U.N.'s Climate Change Conference.
One way to show that you are a global ally is by downloading the new "Beds Are Burning" track, for free, beginning on October 1.
Every download will count as a unique digital petition and help the fight for climate justice.http://www.timeforclimatejustice.org/
It might not seem like a big deal, but the more people we can prove are aware, the more our leaders will know the world is watching.
OK, Cat Lady I will try to fart less and save on greenhouse gas emissions. Happy now?
I've become much more aware and try to do my part.
That video makes fighting green house gas emissions look fun.
My kids know that...I'm still sketchy about it. They are trying to teach an old dog some new tricks though.
nicely done. there are a little things we can do...and a lot of little things add up on either side. will check out the site as well...sounds like a fun way to involve the kids.
As a retired children's librarian, I like your approach to finding information. Lots of teachers at my old school always said that for a quick overview of a subject, they would turn to children's nonfiction books.
By the way, I arrived here from the Blog Action Day website. Well over 8700 bloggers are taking part today! Thank you for participating.
Fun way to stir up some proactivity, Cat Lady! I remember once when my son was only mebbe 5, I was out back grilling. I always used charcoal for the flavor I liked it gave the meats. He out of the blue asked me one day why I was using charcoal instead of propane, and when I told him, he looked upwards and then and at me and said, "Yeah - tastes good, but what about the air?"
I switched to propane. You can get wood chips to set in there that add the nice woody flavor without all the emmissions going into the atmosphere.
The Old Silly
Triple Mom: Thanks for the link!
frigginloon: Kudos on adding restraint to the cause.
Peachy: It's the little things that add up.
Nanodance: I know no good reason why you can't fight global warming with regular toothbrushing.
Lee: Most of the important things in life I've learned from kids.
Brian: The site even has games... guess how I spent my day yesterday.
Clairz: I love learning from kids' books! It's much more entertaining. Thanks back at ya!
Old Silly: Don't you just hate when our kids are right! Gotta love 'em.
Finally a website that explains the problem on my level.
Thank-you Catlady!
I don't know what I would do without you.
Eat the cats?
Yes, we should all raise cats for food (Thanks for the idea Quirky)!
Today, I will walk to my mailbox instead of driving. ;-)
Quirkyloon: I always need things explained to me very s..l..o..w..l..y and c..l..e..a..r..l..y, which is why I often resort to web sites for kids. It just works better for me that way.
Reffie: Good idea... maybe I should raise cats for food... that might make them worth having. Naaah... I still hate kitty litter too much.
(And I'm making a commitment to staying home forever... for the cause. Please send money so I don't have to wreck the environment by going to work.)
another thing about putting it down to the kid's level is it isn't so big and so scary and so our little minds can not freeze up and actually get to work!
thanks for the great post!
Great post. Sometimes seeing it like a child makes more of a lasting impression than listening to some stuffed shirt spout out statistics and use a laser pointer on charts.
Muchos Gracias!
Sometimes the answer is simple and looking us right in the face.
I hope those two characters aren't running the water the whole time while they brush their teeth. LOL
Well, that brought things down to a level everyone can understand. Good job. Loved the video.
Colette Amelia: I like to do things in manageable pieces... otherwise it looks intimidating and I get nothing accomplished, hence keeping it simple.
Michelle: Good to see you! Hope this makes an impression on some more people!
Wings: Yep... it's right there if we pay attention.
Poetikat: I emailed them to remind them to turn it off. Nice aim with the spit, I thought.
Dufus: That's me... bringing it down to everybody's level! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great post, Catlady! What was that quote from the Bible? "Unless you become as little children..." Seems that idea works on more levels than just the religious!
Alright! I'll floss! ;)
Great post...
Now excuse me while I floss - thx for the reminder:)
Roy: Thanks! And welcome to the CatLady's house!
jennyonthespot: You'd better... or I'm telling your mom.
Phillipia: Please do! (Do you prefer peppermint flavor floss or plain?)
Nice to see progress, particularly when the last administration said there was no such thing......good post. WE can combat this!
Doesn't take much to start.
Lovely post about a grave issue, presented with a great sense of humour.;)
Beautiful blog; I love the title.;)
Thank you so much for stopping by my place and leaving a wonderful comment, yes please do come back, I love meeting new people.;)
xo
Bright simplicity!
Thank you, Cat Lady, love your humour!
:)
I like to point out the difference between water and ice, is less than 2 degrees F...
I Wonder Wye: I'm wondering wye more people don't recognize that this is actually a problem!
Captain Dumbass: Which is why I'm sitting here freezing in my attempt to keep the heat off until November! Okay, I confess, I've popped it on a few times.
Protege: Thank you for your kind words! I find humor tends to loosen people up enough to (hopefully) hear something they might have otherwise blown off.
travelinistanbul: Keepin' it simple... for simple minds like mine.
buffalodick: Indeed... perhaps this has something to do with melting the polar ice cap? HMMMM...
What a great post this is about climate change. Simple and to the point without being scary. You might be a cat lady, but you definitely aren't crazy.
Mike: I just like to pretend I'm not crazy every once in a while to throw people off.
Very late commenting but this was an excellent way of explaining that from small things, big things grow. It doesn't have to be a complicated scientific or political issue. . . together we can make a difference.
