My Un-American Activities

Yes, it's true... I am Un-American. How so, you may ask? I freely confess... I am single-handedly destroying the American economy by once again staying home on Black Friday.

Horrors! How could I be so unfeeling? How could I not help boost our struggling economy?

I have never once felt the need to go out and spend, spend, spend on the day following Thanksgiving. It's just not my idea of a good time. Because:

1. I hate crowds.
2. I hate spending money I don't have.
3. I don't need any of the things that my television is telling me I need.
4. I don't need to get my picture on a People of WalMart web site.
5. I hate crowds.

To make matters worse, I've been hanging out at the Heathen Social Club again. We have a little program going on there called the "Greater Good Project" in which we take what we would have spent on the holiday, cut that amount in half, and donate the half we don't use to service projects. The idea being to become aware of needs greater than our own and to live a little more simply so that others may simply live. For each of the past several years, the Heathen Social Club has donated close to $75,000 to this fund. The money collected goes to programs such as "The Honduras Project". The Honduras Project involves members of the Heathen Social Club giving their time and money to help provide clean water, support medical care and improve schools in Honduras.

So, yeah, it's a pretty Un-American concept... staying home on Black Friday so that we can share the wealth with others who need it more. Besides... I'm still on my tryptophan high from all the turkey. Gotta go take a nap!

Well, now you know Glenn Beck is going to be ripping you a new one, you Marxist, Commie, Socialist. Giving to those less fortunate indeed! And you probably don't have a birth certificate either!

Love the post. I am sooooooo not spending a dime today. In fact, except to go pick up horse manure, I'm not leaving the house.

Hugs, Jayne

What a great idea!

I say let's all dig deep and give to the Quirkyloon Project!

A worthy, worthy cause!

But wait. I would have to cut my Diet Dr. Pepper consumption by half?

I'm not sure I can do it after all.

But I'm sure YOU ALL have a much bigger heart than mine, so go ahead and donate to The Quirkyloon Project.

Thanks for the publicity Catlady! *meow*

Jayne: Horse shit beats the bullshit of Black Friday any day! McCarthy would have loved me!

Quirky: Dr Pepper is exempt from the Greater Good Project. I shall send half my Dr Pepper supply directly to the Quirkyloon Project, though! In fact, you can have ALL the Diet Dr Pepper I find in my house.

otin: I hate shopping! Even when it's not Black Friday.

Brian: Turkey sandwiches are the best!

I love that concept. I will take half of the Diet Dr Pepper you're giving Quirky.

I'm not shopping today and I shall try to shop very little this season if possible.

Enjoy your trytophan high!

Great idea....the half/half I mean. And I bet most people don't even notice the missing half!

I hate crowds/shopping too. I hardly ever go to the sales, shudder.

you know, i was just reading an article about a family camping out in the Best Buy parking lot - tent, cots, sleeping bag, generator, 32" flat screen tv... the works - and all i could think was that any other day of the year they'd have been arrested for even loitering...

besides what's UnAmerican about not rushing out to purchase products made on foriegn soil?

For a minute there I thought you were going to tell me you were Canadian. But that's not un-American...just loonie. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

Great idea donating half of your money to a good cause!! I also do not shop on black friday or after it. I always get any shopping done before the holidays, but...

I noticed very little traffic today. We are definitely not out of the economic downturn.

I hate shopping. But I don't mind crowds. I like to look at all the people. Endlessly fascinating!

I am truly shocked at your abandonment of the American Way. How can you show your face in public anymore? Tsk, tsk. Next, you'll be telling me you don't like Twinkies.

Reffie: The Dr Pepper is necessary to counteract the effect of tryptophan.

Spud: The sales make me shudder too!

Ms. Petite: What could Best Buy possibly have that would merit that? And a flat screen TV for while they wait? *shakes head* Besides... if the whole family's there, how will it be a surprise on Christmas Day.

Dufus: There's been many a time I've contemplated making a run for the border! (Or to walk into Lake Ontario and start swimming til I reach the other, saner side.)

Gayle: You went out and returned to tell the tale? Impressive.

Ace: Vlad and I did venture out late in the day to go to the cheap movie theater to see Zombieland and there was hardly anyone there. The Zombies must have all been out shopping.

Megan: Do you shop only at WalMart for the people watching value they offer?

Okay, I confess. I've also never done Black Friday shopping. If anything, I'm usually done buying stuff by October. I hope you had a great Thannksgiving!

http://howtobecomeacatladywithoutthecats.blogspot.com said...

Michelle: I don't buy stuff in October either. Except for Vlad, I don't really buy things for my family anymore. I find that a donation to their favorite charity works well... or a few little items from the retro Record Archive... they have fun stuff like potato guns!

I cannot concieve getting out of my nice warm bed at at 3 a.m. to go stand in the dark, cold morning to "save" money on a sweater - or a tv - or a toy.

Stephanie: Nothing is worth getting out of a warm bed at that ungodly hour! (Except if you have to pee.)
