Stockings Inside of Stockings

Okay, how did it get to be the middle of December already? It seems like only yesterday it was Thanksgiving and then I was falling down the stairs and it's been pretty much of a blur ever since. I guess clunking yourself in the head can do that to you. But, enough of that whole business. I've graduated from crutches to a cane to walking on my own most of the time. Guess that means there are no more excuses for not getting into the holiday spirit.

Now that Vlad's gotten older I have to get a little more creative about holiday gifts. Not because he knows where I stash them and I need a better hiding place, but because he's the type of kid who doesn't ask for much. It used to be easier when he was little. Get him a whole mess of trains and Legos and stuff and he was happy as a clam. So far, all he's told me he wants this year is socks. Somehow I think it's going to be a real let down on Christmas morning if all he gets is a pair of socks in his Christmas stocking. Stockings inside of stockings.

Even my Christmas wish list is longer than that. I definitely need some more ideas... soon!
Because it's going to be really embarrassing if he gets me more gifts than I get him.

Bad mother! Bad mother!

I haven't bought much for teenage boys. Wait, how old is he? Old, right? I was gonna say go to thinkgeek.com they have some really cool (aka geeky) stuff. Needless to say I've bought lots of stuff from them.

I just want a clean house. For a year. Seriously.

Ditto otin! GCs (to the right store) always work.

I have had that same problem in the past. It's so hard when they don't tell you what they want!! Just say you need to know by X date..that always works for me!!
I want those socks!!

I like the idea of socks inside of socks inside of socks inside of socks. Think I'll use that one but, yes, he probably would like something more.

Yes. Gift cards. Cause there's probably stuff he really wants but he's too good a kid to ask for it.

Glad to hear you are walking unassisted! How about a cat for the boy this Christmas?

Wow, a kid that has all of his material desires with the exception of socks...

How 'bout an iTunes card inside of socks inside of stockings. iTunes is my go to gift for anyone between 12 and 21. (And what yarn is that?!!! I want it in my stocking!)

Socks inside stockings? It reminds me of those nesting dolls when you open one up and find a smaller one inside. I like red-headed dreamer's thinking. I say keep piling socks inside with little special items inside the socks.

Hey CatLady! Glad you're back, we missed you. Poor Vlad. Ooh, tell Santa that he can have my coal; I'm still working through last year's. Indigo

I probably shouldn't be commenting AFTER reading VE's blog.

But howz about some gift cards? I hear there's some great sales on gifts cards from Linen's and Things, Circuity City (and many other OUT OF BUSINESS retailers).

Just a thought.

And we all know how incredibly THOUGHTFUL I am.

I'm so glad you getting back up and around. I think the only thing a teenage boy really wants is a teenage girl. Good luck with that one. ;)

rxBambi: Vlad is 22 now... where did the time go? We're also fans of ThinkGeek!

Otin & Janice: Gift cards... always a good fall-back option. But one really needs TOYS for Christmas morning!

Gayle: My problem is that he's too considerate... he's worried about my finances! It's great having such a sensitive kid, but he should know by now that I'm still going to splurge no matter what!

Michelle: I'm almost afraid to think of what he probably really wants! (Last year he asked for ammunition for his big boy toys... bullets in the stocking just seemed wrong! But I did it anyway!)

Reffie: NO CATS! Unless he's willing to come home from college every day to take care of the kitty litter!

Maelstrom: I know... it's pretty weird, isn't it! I bet your Christmas wish list has way more on it!

red-headed dreamer: One of my students gave me a pair of those socks for Christmas once. Love em! I should really knit him a pair of fun socks... haven't knit him any since he was a little kid.

Michelle: I could knit teeny tiny socks to put all the gift cards into!

Indigo: At least coal is useful! A cat lady's gotta stay warm! (Hope you get luckier this year!)

Brian: Shopping trip? We both HATE the mall!

Quirky: I think I still have some of those gift cards for defunct stores! But, brainz... I could always stuff his stocking with brainz!

Jayne: Ah, how well you know him! Do you think he'd settle for one of those inflate-a-date types? (I think it would be a little difficult trying to shove a real live girl into the stocking!

Every boy likes porn.

It's the gift that keeps on giving in five minute increments.

You're welcome.

I got my very first bra in my stocking. I was mortified. My younger sisters taunted me all day with, "Me-Me got a bra, Me-Me got a bra". I would have killed them but I figured they would not let me take my new bike to jail.

Anyway, here are a few suggestions: gift cards for clothing, music and ammo, gift certificates to his favorite eateries, and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

Gift cards are definitely the way to go!

I never know what to get my kids either. The older two always say "I dunno" when I ask what they want, and the youngest asks for things like a new lap-top or some kind of PS/2 game or such as the like. Trouble is that stuff is all out of my financial reach. Sorry I can't help you out with any ideas!

I have a confession to make: I hate practical gifts like socks. I can't imagine asking for socks for Christmas. Nothing is more boring than socks, or ties, or underwear (which my mother in law got me one year) or gloves or coats or hats. Those are all things you need. I like toys for Christmas. And fudge.

Frigginloon: I think I'm going down with the ship.

Moooooog: Now, that's probably the most thoughtful gift I could get him. Of course, that also means I probably won't see much of him over the break.

Me-Me: So, you're saying I shouldn't get him a bra for Christmas?

Bird Shit & Baby Caca: I think gift certificates are in Vlad's future!

Eric: I know! I only found out myself this week!

Skye: It's actually because I'm a little short of funds these days that he doesn't want to ask for anything. Dang thoughtful kid!

Mike: Toys = good! Fudge = good! I got underwear one year... definite buzz kill.

Stockings inside of stockings is not so bad. Now, if you get to the point of stockings inside of stockings inside of stockings, then ... well, yes - you have a serious problem!

The best gift cards I have found are the Visa and MasterCard ones. You don't have to worry about a store going out of business before you get here the day after Christmas. Put it in the stocking with a really cool gadget like one of the remote control helicopters (my hubby & BIL love theses). I would suggest getting two and lots of batteries.
